Position Overview

The Vice President Global Packaging Development is a highly visible position central to the continued growth and profitability of the company's global health & beauty care products business. Will lead the organizations efforts to anticipate, and/or outpace current industry trends and help create strategies that will guide the company through the rapidly changing consumer landscape and position the organization for long-term and sustainable success.

Leveraging deep CPG domain knowledge; and their full breadth and depth of packaging innovation and development management solutions, the Vice President Packaging Development will lead next level packaging development and industrial design efforts that supports the Global R&D Innovation strategy. i.e. identify consumer driven structural package and application/dispensing opportunities, developing programs and organization to leverage those opportunities and take the appropriate actions to deliver high impact structural, aesthetic & functional package contributions on holistic product development results that build the business on a sustained basis.

Responsible for the strategic development, engineering and quality of execution of all packaging for the company's consumer brands and for planning & coordination of global packaging needs. This accounts for over 70% of all materials costs incurred by the company's and is the primary interface with marketing, creative, R&D, supply chain, other key internal stakeholders and external vendors to ensure that timely, aesthetic and cost effective packaging decisions are made. Drives the value analysis forum and coordination of new product introduction reviews across supply chain and through new product execution processes.

Responsible for packaging recommendations in relation to existing or proposed automated filling & process equipment in order to provide the most effective model for economic, comprehensive and reliable production capability at manufacturing locations.

Performance Profile Duties/Responsibilities

  • Formulates strategic plan for Global Package Development organization to meet five year product pipeline deliverables, on time, and within budget.
  • Defines an innovation program that provides superior consumer use experiences which either justifies capital investment and cost up charges or provides cost advantages vs. competition.
  • Provides effective strategic and operational leadership for and guidance to the international groups and collaboration with Marketing and manufacturing packaging engineers around the world.
  • Build overall organizational capabilities and the development of people, processes and systems to deliver strategy which includes the start-up and leadership of an industrial design function within R&D.
  • Leads and drives the development and adoption of global, performance-based specifications and assembly standards.
  • Demonstrates cross -functional leadership which positively influences business and technical management to achieve new levels of package performance and contribution.

  • Delivery of innovation, organization and execution project milestones with superior quality.
  • Consistent track record of identifying and delivering meaningful package innovations across the business and geographies.
  • Increase in capacity/efficiency/productivity of the organization and development plans in place, audited and acted upon for direct reports.
  • Contributes to the achievement of overall business, financial, organizational, functional and consumer acceptability metrics (to be defined).
  • Effectively manages and lead the organization across geographies - R&D, marketing and Tech Ops partners recognize high performance and collaboration by organization internationally and in US. 

Education/Experience

  • B.S. in Packaging, Mechanical Engineering or related scientific/technical education.
  • Experience driving innovation in primary and secondary packaging to drive commercial gains.
  • Experience in developing high volume consumer package components (ideally personal care / cosmetics / OTC-consumer health care) focused on appearance, usability and with carefully managed cost considerations.
  • Superior knowledge & experience in the design & development of primary and secondary packaging components.
  • An in-depth knowledge of manufacturing processes and current knowledge of the packaging industry.
  • Strong program management expertise.
  • Strong leadership skills.
  • Exceptional capability to lead organizations through change in structure, process and practice.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and develop global teams.
